Queer Ecologies Garden

About the Garden

Alice Austen House and its surrounding park and gardens are nationally designated sites of LGBTQ+ significance, having been occupied for 30 years by Alice and her loving partner, Gertrude Tate.

With the distinct viewpoint that gardens have long been spaces of acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community, we have created this garden to serve as a gathering place that offers freedom, comfort, and fosters understanding.

People of the Queer Ecologies Project

The QEP was established by Victoria Munro, Director of the Alice Austen House.
Planning for the garden was in collaboration with Pratt Institute and the instrumental efforts of the New York Restoration Project.

The garden is maintained by the staff of the Alice Austen House in partnership with Gender Sexuality Alliance high school students and community volunteers and partners.
